In celebration of Black History Month, Bryan Prince a descendant of slaves, writes about the Weems family and their struggle to be free from slavery. John Weems, purchased his own freedom by paying the owner of his enslaved wife and eight children an annual fee to keep them together at one plantation. When that owner died, the Weemses were separated and scattered throughout the South. John Weems, heartbroken and desperate, decided to raise the money to buy his family’s freedom and reunite them.
