Down-to-Read with Daniela: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Age Group:
Adult

Genre:
Classic, Coming-of-age, Realistic Fiction, Historical, Mystery, Romance

Summary:
Jane Eyre is not your average heroine. Orphaned from an early age, Jane is left in the care of her cruel and bitter Aunt Reed. Rather than succumb to such unrelenting torment, Jane maintains a strong sense of confidence and dignity, and an unfailing belief in her moral consciousness. After leaving Lowood School, she endeavours to become a governess, and soon obtains a position at Thornfield Hall.

Jane settles into her new role and befriends her young French pupil Adele. At the same time, she finds herself becoming close friends with the master of the house, the surly Mr. Rochester. Mr. Rochester, a man nearly two decades her senior, has clearly overcome despair and tragedy in his past. Jane finds solace in his witty banter and begins to develop deeper feelings for him. Mr. Rochester reciprocates her affections. But the darkly passionate man is hiding a terrible secret and it is only a matter of time before all is revealed.

My Thoughts:
Jane Eyre is certainly a departure in writing style from the modern novels that I typically read. It took me a while to get into the initially slow pace. But patience definitely pays off; the book is not called a classic for no reason.

Jane Eyre is a marvel of English literature. It is absolutely perfect in tone, dialogue, plot development and most especially its characterization of the spirited young Jane and her troubled master. Their relationship is both real and fantastic; the conclusion to their love affair is astounding.
